Advanced Cataract Surgery at GRO

If you think you may have cataracts, now is the time to schedule a complete eye exam. If you are ready for surgery, the doctors at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology are happy to review the options and help you choose the best solution for your unique eyes. A cataract is when the natural lens inside the eye becomes discolored and clouded, resulting in hazy or blurred vision at all distances. By age 75, approximately 50% of Americans have cataracts. Surgery is the only way a cataract can be removed. More than 3 million cataract procedures are performed each year, making it the most common surgery performed in the United States.

At the time of cataract surgery, the cloudy lens in your eye is removed and replaced with a clear, artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). Grand Rapids Ophthalmology offers four options for intraocular lenses, including three Advanced Technology IOLs, and traditional IOLs that improve vision but may require the need for glasses to see well close up and/or at a distance after surgery. Traditional cataract surgery is accepted by most insurance plans.

Advanced Technology IOLs optimize near and distance vision, and correct astigmatism. Advanced Technology IOLs reduce your dependency on glasses or bifocals after surgery. The best lens for you depends on many factors, including your lifestyle and specific vision needs. Additional costs are involved, and many patients choose to use Grand Rapids Ophthalmology’s interest-free financing option or pay with cash or credit card.

IOL Options to Consider

Today, IOLs are available as monofocal lenses (correcting vision for one distance), accommodating lenses (correcting for near, far, and intermediate vision), toric lenses (astigmatism correcting), and multifocal lenses (correcting for near, far, and intermediate vision).

Symfony® IOL Lens

Symfony® IOL is the first lens of its kind to combine two unique technologies for outstanding visual performance: an Extended Depth of Focus IOL provides a continuous range of high-quality vision from near to far and points in between and may reduce the frequency of wearing glasses. Symfony Toric intraocular lens compensates for corneal astigmatism as well as a range of continuous vision including distance and near.

Alcon AcrySof® Toric

The Alcon Acrysof® Toric intraocular lens compensates for corneal astigmatism. This lens does not allow for continuous vision including near but can provide exceptional distance vision.

Acrysof® ReSTOR® Lens

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® intraocular lens (IOL) is an artificial lens that can restore a patient’s full range of vision while reducing a patient’s dependence on bifocals or prescription reading glasses.

Acrysof® IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL

The AcrySof® IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL is the first IOL of its kind to be FDA approved! Unlike other IOLs, the IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL provides clear vision at three vision distances: close, intermediate, and far away!  Westlake Eye Specialists is the first eye care practice in Austin, Texas to offer patients this advanced technology! Like other IOLs, the trifocal lens can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
