LASIK has improved the day-to-day lives of millions of people around the world—but is it right for you? As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to do your homework.
“Successful LASIK depends on being a good candidate,“ says Dr. Scott Weber, an eye surgeon at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology’s Greenville office. “The easiest way to find out if LASIK is right for you is to make an appointment for a complete evaluation to discuss the procedure.”
In this space, Dr. Weber answers questions he often gets from his LASIK patients:
What happens at an evaluation appointment?
This initial appointment includes a very thorough eye exam that uses a series of diagnostic tests and scans designed to thoroughly check your vision and eye health, including dilating your eyes to enlarge the pupil. Based on the results of this initial exam, you and your surgeon will discuss whether LASIK is right for you.
What makes me a good candidate for LASIK?
To be a good candidate, you must be between the ages of 18-60, have healthy eyes with a stable prescription, and wear corrective lenses for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism.
Factors that may disqualify you from LASIK surgery include large pupils, corneal scarring, dry eyes, a very high glasses prescription, and certain eye or medical conditions. If you’re pregnant or nursing, you’ll need to wait 3-6 months after you’re done for LASIK.
Is LASIK safe?
With millions of successful procedures each year, the complication rate of LASIK is extremely low. At Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, we maintain the highest quality and safety standards by using state-of-the-art Custom Blade-Free laser technology. Our LASIK patients are the only ones in greater Grand Rapids to receive their procedure in a certified surgical center.
What should I look for in a LASIK provider?
Make sure the surgeon who evaluates you for LASIK will be the same surgeon who performs the procedure. Also, look for access to your doctors before and after the procedure. Grand Rapids Ophthalmology’s team approach allows you access to our team of doctors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—providing you expert, comprehensive care before, during, and after surgery.
If cost is a factor, financing options are available. For example, Grand Rapids Ophthalmology offers zero-money down and interest-free payments for 24 months.
Bottom line: A free-evaluation appointment is the first step toward a lifetime of improved vision.
“Many of my patients say their only regret is putting off LASIK for so long,” says Dr. Weber.
Grand Rapids Ophthalmology offers a free evaluation and pre-procedure testing with the surgeon who will also do your procedure to see if you are a candidate for Laser Vision Correction (LASIK and other laser procedures).
