The Surgical Care Center of Michigan was recently named a Best Performer by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) in its Cataract Extraction with Lens Insertion benchmarking study.
The study looked at several measures of patient care in AAAHC-accredited institutions from July to December 2023. Surgical Care Center of Michigan was recognized as having the shortest pre-procedure wait times — the time between a patient’s arrival and the start of the procedure.
Executive Director Kris Kilgore says the surgery center takes numerous measures to prepare patients and the operating room for a streamlined surgical experience. Cataract surgeries are scheduled in the morning, and more complicated surgeries, such as cornea and glaucoma, are scheduled later in the day.
The group submitted randomly selected clinical records from surgeries performed at different times of day to see if scheduling affected pre-procedure times. The team was pleased to learn the times were consistent.
“Our results reinforce that that working together as a team helps us to be more efficient, while also providing quality patient care,” Kris stated.
While the team celebrates the formal AAAHC recognition, it’s the patient feedback that is most gratifying.
“Our compassion, teamwork and efficiency enhance the patient experience,” said Kris. “We see it in our patient satisfaction surveys and we hear it directly from patients while they are in our facility and when they return to the clinic post-op. We love those positive comments.”
